On Hold Until April 30th

Once again, we're on hold for a bit, so I'm extending "Silhouettes" through the end of April.

Reasons: well, a few include March Madness, tax season, and the lending of moral support to some people I care about. There's a lot going on, but in a time of crisis, my Numero Uno is my family.

See you in May.

Current Painting Challenge

Silhouettes
In keeping with the give-away on my other blog Still Life Workshop (when that one reaches 50 members),
I am holding a give-away here for when Studio Atelier reaches 150 members.

You can join Studio Atelier two ways:
Follow by email - Look to the right on this screen and scroll down.
Or through Google Friend Connect (right underneath that)

Those 150 names will go into the drawing for one lucky person to win one of my miniature paintings.

Links to the still life workshop blog and website are in the side panel on the right.

Note: The photos for the painting challenges should be large enough to print an 8" x 10" image. To download the full size image, right click with your mouse and click on "open in new tab". That will put the full size image into a new screen that you can then save onto your computer.

Thanks!

Living on the edge of the foothills west of Denver, I have seen many beautiful sunrises and sunsets. I love watching the progression of the light as it changes from the first hint of the new day on the horizon, to the full emergence of the sun in the morning sky.
Winter Sunrise
Here we have silhouettes of aspen trees backdropped by a January sunrise. Which is the real star of this image - the trees or the colorful sky? You decide.  Use this as your inspiration for a painting, or perhaps you have your own silhouettes to paint.

Remember to follow the "Rule of the Road" on the right, submitting a digital image of your painting or drawing as an attachment when you send it to me in an email.  We're continuing with no deadline on submittals, so do what you can, when you can, and send me your pictures.

The next Studio Atelier painting challenge will be posted around April 30th.  Good luck, have fun, and I look forward to seeing your submittals!

A Family Day

Jean Nelson

To all of you who have been waiting for the next painting challenge:  Thanks for your patience.  Sometimes a person needs to take stock and pause in life. The holidays were the perfect time for me to do that and spend lots of time with my family doing family activities.
One of our favorite annual events is to visit the Denver Zoo when they have their “Zoo Lights” display.  However, I was not successful in getting any photos of the Zoo Lights for the Studio Atelier blog.  However here is a photo from that day that I’ve selected for you to try.

This month's painting challenge shows Clear Creek in Wheat Ridge, Colorado.  You wouldn't know it by this photo that the area surrounding this park includes small businesses and busy arterial streets.  Clear Creek is a tributary to the South Platte river and is one of the major drainageways in the Denver metropolitan area that has been preserved for mulitple uses, including drainage and flood control, wildlife habitat, and recreation.

Perhaps you have similar preserved areas where you live and can share them in a painting.

Remember to follow the "Rules of the Road" on the right and send me your images as an attachment to your email. The next Studio Atelier painting challenge will posted about Sunday, November 25, 2012. Thanks to everyone who participates, and good luck!

Colorado is famous for its autumn foliage; aspen trees in the high country change to golds, oranges and reds. It seems this year things are a bit ahead of schedule. I managed to grab some photos this week with the trees at their prime, not more than 30 minutes west of Denver proper.

Colorado Gold
It's a beautiful time of year, and the temperatures are practically balmy in the mountains.  Who knows how long that will last, for in Colorado we say that if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute.  It's always changing!

I hope this photo inspires you in your art work.  Happy painting!

Remember to follow the "Rules of the Road" on the right and send me your images as an attachment to your email.  The October challenge will be posted about Sunday,October 21, 2012.  Thanks to everyone who participates, and good luck.
