Update: The Return is in Sight

It has taken a few YEARS, but Studio Atelier will be re-activated soon. My studio is now functional, and I've been warming up with some sketches and watercolors. I also have been taking some online classes through the Sktchy app and from Dreama Tolle Perry.

I hope you are having fun with your art. Check back here in August for the new Studio Atelier painting challenge!

Colorado is famous for its autumn foliage; aspen trees in the high country change to golds, oranges and reds. It seems this year things are a bit ahead of schedule. I managed to grab some photos this week with the trees at their prime, not more than 30 minutes west of Denver proper.

Colorado Gold
It's a beautiful time of year, and the temperatures are practically balmy in the mountains.  Who knows how long that will last, for in Colorado we say that if you don't like the weather, just wait a minute.  It's always changing!

I hope this photo inspires you in your art work.  Happy painting!

Remember to follow the "Rules of the Road" on the right and send me your images as an attachment to your email.  The October challenge will be posted about Sunday,October 21, 2012.  Thanks to everyone who participates, and good luck.

October Challenge: A Public Landscape

Submittal Deadline:  October 24 2010
11:59 PM MDT

I was delighted to received so many submittals on Garden of the Gods.  I love everyone's interpretations and am humbled that the picture inspired more than one of you.  Thank-you for these gifts!

From the gods' garden to one of man's creations, this month's picture shows a median strip near a local office building.  I was surprised one late and HOT Saturday afternoon by the vibrant hot pink flowers and how wonderfully healthy all of the plants were.  Being without my camera at the time, and with poor lighting, I returned Sunday morning to be rewarded with no traffic and with morning light that gave lovely shadows.  Two lessons were learned here:  1)  even a lowly median strip can be made to look beautiful, and 2) don't leave home without a camera!

You will have four (4) weeks to work on this challenge. Remember to follow the "Rules of the Road" on the right and send me your images as an attachment to your email by October 24, when you also will be able to see what I have in store for you for the November challenge. Thanks to everyone who participates.

Happy painting!

September 2010 Challenge: Garden of the Gods

This month's picture shows some of the spectacular rock formations at Garden of the Gods Park in Colorado Springs.  It's an easy walk from the main parking lot south along the trail loop that takes one right up to these giant spires.  And if you ever visit Colorado, make this a destination.  It is a beautiful place.

July 2010 Challenge: Koi Pond

Wow!  Great job, everyone.  You all did a wonderful job on this difficult topic, and I look forward to your submittals on future challenges.

A 4-week challenge

We were super busy during June, and I struggled to find the time to paint the June challenge.  Work (the kind that gives me a paycheck) dominated my time most of the month.  Then there were those "end of school year" parties, anniversaries, and birthday parties, and...well, you get the picture.

At first glance, the photograph seemed to be too complicated to find something in it to paint.  However, I had the photo displayed in my studio so that I could see it whenever I worked on something else or when I was just passing by.   When I did have the time to paint, I first did a few thumbnail sketches to plot out the darks and lights and the general pattern of shapes.  I also modified the composition of the area that I was going to paint.  This piece came together fairly quickly (for me, for I am notoriously SLOW).

Which brings me to my next comment:  the point of these challenges is to get the creative juices flowing.  Not everything in a picture will be important enough to include in the artwork.  If you enjoy copying it as a learning exercise, that's great!  But feel free to edit the details of the picture.

Maybe you want to make a study of shapes, or light patterns.  Maybe you want to display the image as line art.  Or, maybe you want to explore unusual color choices.  These are all good ways to learn about your art.  Find an approach you enjoy, and you will find yourself painting/drawing/coloring/... more and more!

And maybe my photo doesn't excite you enough to paint (like, "Hey, Barb, I can take better pictures than you can!"),  but it does give you an idea for a future art piece - somewhere you might have to visit to research your idea, paint plein aire, or photograph.  That is a wonderful thing!  Go for it!

The July challenge is a Koi pond.  Water is always challenging to depict, and this photo shows a still pond with lots of reflected images on the water surface, and small fish swimming just above the bottom of the pond.

You will have four (4) weeks to work on this challenge. Remember to follow the "Rules of the Road" on the right and send me your images as an attachment to your email by August 1.  I hope to have something special lined up for the August challenge, so I'll see you back here then. Thanks to everyone who participates.
